A yes among the cacti

The place

El Huerto is a working orchard outside the noise of Cabo: rows of green, giant cacti standing guard, long tables under a timber roof. From the air it looks like a quilt. From the ground it smells like herbs and warm dirt.

The two of them

Sam laughs with her whole face. Matthew is the quiet one until he sees her, and then he is not quiet at all. Their first look happened against a plain white wall and still felt like a film.

A note read out loud. A long hug. Then the giggles, which never really stopped.

The day

A wooden triangle in the grass, chairs on both sides, friends who cried before the vows even started. Then a long dinner at the orchard tables, food going around, glasses up.

What I took with me

The last light through the trees, the two of them walking off between the rows like nobody was watching. Somebody always is. This time it was me, and I am grateful.
